Unveiling the cycle of dimethylsulfoniopropionate in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre

چکیده

A longstanding scientific enigma exists in oligotrophic subtropical waters: it appears that bacterial respiration contributes up to 90% of total community respiration even though the contribution of bacterial biomass to total biomass is much less. It has been suggested that experimental artifacts including pre-incubation filtration procedures, applied in order to separate bacteria from the rest of the microbial community by means of sizefractionation, and long incubation times used in traditional respiration measurements may lead to erroneous rates, but few field data exist to test this hypothesis.

Effect of visible light on dimethylsulfoniopropionate assimilation and conversion to dimethylsulfide in the North Pacific Subtropical Gyre

The aim of the present study was to assess the effect of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR, 400 to 700 nm) on the utilization of dissolved dimethylsulfoniopropionate (DMSPd) by microbial communities in the oligotrophic North Pacific Subtropical Gyre, using 35S-labeled substrate. Rates of DMSPd-sulfur (DMSPd-S) assimilation into macromolecules of microorganisms in surface mixed layer seaw...

A Westward-Intensified Decadal Change in the North Pacific Thermocline and Gyre-Scale Circulation

From the early 1970s to the mid-1980s, the main thermocline of the subarctic gyre of the North Pacific Ocean shoaled with temperatures at 200–400-m depth cooling by 18–48C over the region. The gyre-scale structure of the shoaling is quasi-stationary and intensified in the western part of the basin north of 308N, suggesting concurrent changes in gyre-scale transport. A similar quasi-stationary c...

Freshening of the upper thermocline in the North Pacific subtropical gyre associated with decadal changes of rainfall

Repeated observations in the North Pacific subtropical gyre near Hawaii reveal pronounced freshening (--0.15 psu) and cooling (--0.5øC) of the upper thermocline from 1991 through 1997. The freshening appears progressively later on deeper isopycnals consistent with subduction of surface salinity anomalies at higher latitudes and subsequent southward advection. Winter rainfall anomalies in the ce...

How ocean color can steer Pacific tropical cyclones

Because ocean color alters the absorption of sunlight, it can produce changes in sea surface temperatures with further impacts on atmospheric circulation. These changes can project onto fields previously recognized to alter the distribution of tropical cyclones. If the North Pacific subtropical gyre contained no absorbing and scattering materials, the result would be to reduce subtropical cyclo...

A Numerical Simulation of the Mean Water Pathways in the Subtropical and Tropical Pacific Ocean

A reduced-gravity, primitive-equation, upper-ocean general circulation model is used to study the mean water pathways in the North Pacific subtropical and tropical ocean. The model features an explicit physical representation of the surface mixed layer, realistic basin geometry, observed wind and heat flux forcing, and a horizontal grid-stretching technique and a vertical sigma coordinate to ob...
